Car Daytime Running Lights (DRL)

ACEM welcomes the possibility to contribute to the call for comments to the European Commission consultation paper "Saving Lives with Daytime Running Lights (DRL)" dated August 1st, 2006.
Motorcycle accident in-depth studies show that the perception of PTWs by the other road users is one of the main causes of multi-vehicle accidents involving powered two-wheelers and other motor-vehicles.For this reason, ACEM undertook an "Automatic Headlights On" commitment and is currently involved in a research on PTW conspicuity.
ACEM believes it is therefore premature for the European Commission to introduce any action in this field until this research has been completed.
However, given the importance of this consultation, ACEM wishes to first outline the particular situation of PTWs regarding car DRLs and their possible effect on PTW conspicuity. ACEM wishes also to comment on the proposed options for implementation and the questions raised in paragraph 6 of the consultation paper, based on knowledge available at this stage.
