The International Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (IMMA) presented on 21 May 2014 its latest policy document “The Shared Road to Road Safety – A global approach for safer motorcycling”. The presentation took place during a well-attended event at the International Transport Forum (ITF) Summit in Leipzig, Germany.

The “Shared Road to Road Safety” discusses present and future trends in motorcycling at a global level. Specific topics addressed in the report include the diverse usages of PTWs around the world, their importance in economic terms and statistics of PTW use in a wide range of countries.

The document also provides decision-makers with policy recommendations to improve road safety for PTWs through targeted action in different areas (e.g. training and education, infrastructure development, data gathering and analysis). It also gives concrete examples of best practices that have helped to improve road safety outcomes for PTW users in different countries.

One of the key messages of the document is that motorcycling should be mainstreamed into regional, national and local mobility policy plans. For this reason IMMA calls on policy-makers to duly take into consideration PTWs when developing transport plans.

The “Shared Road to Road Safety” builds on a year-long project carried out jointly by all IMMA members under the leadership of Dr. Veneta Vassileva, ACEM Safety Coordinator. The report was also presented during the latest IMMA General Assembly and the Safe Annual Convention organised by SIAM in May 2014.
