Minimising the environmental impact of products and processes

Objective: Parity With Cars

Over the last decade PTWs have achieved remarkable progress in reducing their environmental impact.

In October 2010 the European Commission adopted a long anticipated proposal on new type-approval of L-category vehicles. This proposal makes provisions on many different environmental requirements for a wide range of vehicles such as two- or three-wheel powered cycles, mopeds, motorcycles with and without a side-car, tricycles, on-road quads and mini-cars.

ACEM highlights the importance for a regulatory framework with a long-term vision ensuring employment and the competitiveness of the sector in Europe.

In this context, ACEM wishes to underline the utmost importance of the progressive introduction of environmental measures allowing for sufficient lead-time, for new and existing types. This is particularly important given the price impact that the proposed legislative package will have, especially for small and medium displacement vehicles.

Compared to other road vehicles, PTWs benefit from intrinsic advantages:

Their light weight, their indisputable mobility especially in congested cities, provide them with a reduced environmental impact, particularly on climate change and energy efficiency with fewer emissions of greenhouse gases and with lower fuel consumption.

The manufacturers are constantly investing in R&D with the objective of further improving the efficiency of PTWs in terms of fuel consumption and environmental impact.

Innovations already available on the market and the prototypes featuring alternative propulsion systems ensure the legitimate recognition of PTWs as environmentally friendly means of transport especially in urban areas.
