Minimising the environmental impact of products and processes

Objective: Parity With Cars

Over the last decade PTWs have achieved remarkable progress in reducing their environmental impact. At the 5th Annual Conference on December 1, 2008 ACEM members proposed to achieve parity of motorcycles with passenger cars Euro 5 reductions in 2015, for pollutant emissions.

In the context of upcoming regulatory discussions within DG Enterprise of the European Commission, ACEM’s proposal is to introduce a EURO 3 for mopeds and a Euro 4 stage for motorcycles in 2012, accompanied by a more stringent emission test cycle, and followed by a EURO 5 stage for motorcycles in 2015 with the same emission thresholds as passenger cars. These two steps, necessary to provide sufficient lead time to comply with industrial design and production constraints, are fundamental to contribute to stability and employment in the sector in these difficult times for the economy. Moving from current Euro 3 to Euro 5 will determine a 50% reduction of motorcycle pollutant emissions.

Compared to other road vehicles, PTWs benefit from intrinsic advantages:

Their light weight, their indisputable mobility especially in congested cities, provide them with a reduced environmental impact, particularly on climate change and energy efficiency with fewer emissions of greenhouse gases and with lower fuel consumption.

The manufacturers are constantly investing in R&D with the objective of further improving the efficiency of PTWs in terms of fuel consumption and environmental impact.

Innovations already available on the market and the prototypes featuring alternative propulsion systems ensure the legitimate recognition of PTWs as environmentally friendly means of transport especially in urban areas.
