ACEM Integrated Transport PolicyDownloads: ACEM's position on the Green Paper on Urban Transport The Powered Two-Wheeler contribution to better quality of life in cities Smart Wheels for City Streets Links: ACEM response to the EC consultation on Transport Policy Mobility for Prosperity in Europe Getting to and from work, or even taking a quick trip into town is becoming ever more problematical. Rising traffic levels mean that road users have to spend anything up to several hours a day stuck in long traffic queues. The result: an increase in business costs and a loss of working hours. Europe’s towns and cities face huge problems from the weight of massive traffic congestion and high levels of pollution. One widely used form of transport which (like cycling until the 1980s) has been largely ignored by transport strategists, yet: Provides significant environmental advantages over current patterns of car use. Addresses the transportation problems outlined above, whilst at the same time allowing people to continue to enjoy the freedom that personal powered transport gives. Can play a positive role, along with the encouragement of cycling, walking and public transport in developing an integrated transport strategy for the future. PTWs offer a valuable weapon in the fight against the growing problems of traffic congestion in our towns and cities. Recognition from public authorities at all level would ensure positive PTW policies that not only assist PTW accessibility, but also contribute to reducing rider vulnerability. Stakeholders need to be brougt together to develop management based solutions for safe, accessible and secure PTW use. With the ongoing problems of traffic congestion and the apparent inability of traditionally accepted alternatives to solve the problem, embracing the Powered Two Wheeler as a tool in the fight against traffic congestion and the challenge of urban mobility could represent a considerable step toward the solution of the urban mobility problem. |
