Dear Reader,

It is a privilege to write my first editorial as ACEM President at a time when Member States, in the wake of the Lisbon summit and of the adoption of the new Reform Treaty, are about to sign the final text of this document affecting European citizens and businesses.  Amongst several institutional changes, it is positive for ACEM to notice that new supporting competences on ‘tourism’ and ‘sport’ are now foreseen at European level.

GREEN PAPER ON URBAN MOBILITY

On September 26 the European Commission published the Green Paper on Urban Mobility. ACEM, the Motorcycle Industry in Europe, welcomes the inclusion of Powered Two-Wheelers (PTWs, motorcycles and scooters) in the Green Paper on Urban Transport and looks forward to contributing to the creation of a new urban mobility culture in Europe.

The growing amount of traffic on urban roads requires policy makers to consider all mobility tools available - PTWs are effective solutions to problems caused by urban congestion, providing citizens and businesses with improved mobility and accessibility in cities. [read full article]

FORUM FOR THE AUTOMOBILE AND SOCIETY

In the wake of the publication of the Commission’s Green Paper on Urban Mobility the Forum for the Automobile and Society, a not-for-profit organisation, supported by stakeholders in the automotive community, organised a conference on the 9th of October. "A Green Light for Cities or Papering over the Cracks? A Commission Initiative on Urban Transport”. Acem’s Secretary General was invited to represent the views of the PTW industry as new policies affecting European urban transport are being discussed in Brussels. [read more]

SYNTHETIC OIL CAMPAIGN

The Motorcycle Community in Europe, launches a European-wide campaign to promote the use of synthetic based oils for 2-stroke PTW engines.

The Oil Awareness Campaign “Use Synthetic Oil!” - jointly organised by ACEM, ETRA, FEMA and FIM - will be launched at the ACEM Annual Conference on 20 November 2007 in Brussels.

SUCCESS FOR THE “WEAR & LOCK” CAMPAIGN

Effectiveness evaluation highlights positive results of the Integrated Helmet Campaign

ACEM’s ‘Wear and Lock’ Campaign launched in April has proven to be effective. The final assessment of this pilot project involving three national associations (Anesdor, Ancma and Rai) shows that the young PTW riders responded well to the message of a better use of helmets. [read more]

ACTOR EWAN MC GREGOR’S RIDES AFRICA... for a good cause

On 12 May 2007, actor Ewan McGregor set off on a 15,000 mile motorcycle adventure from John O'Groats in Scotland to Cape Town, Africa’s southernmost city. This journey reached its conclusion three months later after an epic trip throughout a continent that still hides natural and cultural wonders as well as realities deserving more attention.

But Mc Gregor's journey wasn't only about discovering a mysterious continet. The Long Way Down is inspired by the desire to do good. [read full article]
