[HIGHLIGHT ON URBAN MOBILITY]

Stefan Pierer

FORUM FOR THE AUTOMOBILE AND SOCIETY

In the wake of the publication of the Commission’s Green Paper on Urban Mobility the Forum for the Automobile and Society, a not-for-profit organisation, supported by stakeholders in the automotive community, organised a conference on the 9th of October. "A Green Light for Cities or Papering over the Cracks? A Commission Initiative on Urban Transport”. Acem’s Secretary General was invited to represent the views of the PTW industry as new policies affecting European urban transport are being discussed in Brussels.

About 80% of Europeans live in an urban environment. How can they move around more safely and more quickly? How can the goods and services on which they depend be delivered more efficiently? Are congestion charging and road pricing potential instruments to address congestions? How can the different transport modes co-exist as cities become more densely populated? Does the Commission's Green Paper provide a blueprint for effective, efficient and safe mobility? Can we expect public policy to create conditions to stimulate innovative mobility solutions responding to the increasing demands of civil society? These are some of the questions that were addressed at the meeting of the Forum for the Automobile and Society on October 9th.

The FAS is an autonomous organisation aim at bringing together decision makers, the automotive industry and motoring organisations to exchange information and views with all those interested in automotive issues and their impact on society. The Forum for the Automobile and Society (FAS) is intended to be a place to exchange information and views and as a think tank for all those interested in automotive issues. ACEM joined FAS in 2006 with the intent of actively participating to the discussion and represent the PTW industry in the debate.
