Honda inaugurates Safety Institute in Europe
A 4 million Euro investment by Honda Montesa for the training of riders of all ages
Montesa Honda, the Spanish subsidiary of Honda, opened a unique training facility in Barcelona, Spain. The Honda Safety Institute is a modern facility with classrooms, a multi purpose asphalted track, a section with different coefficients of friction for braking practice, an off-road track and an area for trial motorcycles. Honda Montesa estimates that up to 15.000 attendants will follow its training courses each a year.
Since 1992, Honda Safety Institutes around the world provide high schools students with free road safety training.
Instructors in charge of the riding courses were trained in the Honda Driving School, an entity with more than 17 years of experience that accounts for more than 144.000 participants.
The training programmes offered in the Barcelona’s Safety Institute are:
- Young Riders: The best way to learn and have fun. The programme includes a strengthened theoretical and practical training with the use of the Honda Riding Simulator.
- Road Safety: a basic beginners' course for 50cc scooter riding and the development of awareness.
- Validation of the B-A1 license equivalence: a course for car drivers providing an initiation to 125cc scooter riding.
- Basic Defensive Riding: a course for riders of mid displacement motorcycles.
- Medium Defensive Riding: a specialized course for experienced riders of medium to high displacement motorcycles.
- Advanced Defensive Riding: a course designed for experiences riders of medium to high displacement motorcycles wanting to perfect their skills through advanced riding techniques.
- Professionals: a specific course for motorcycle professionals. The contents and the duration of the course adapt to the needs of each group.
The Institute’s facilities, as well as its activities, guarantee quality training to all attendants. Prices for participating range from 70 to 100 Euro, which include the use of a motorcycle and protective equipment.
The educational program of the HIS includes various modules for the control of the motorcycle, focussing on the different skills needed for on-road, off-road and trial tracks. The Riding Simulator designed by Honda is one of the training tools from which HIS’ students can benefit. In addition, all participants receive a Manual of Basic Riding Techniques in print and DVD format.
Honda’s Commitment to Road Safety is based on three basic pillars: preventive, active and passive safety. In 2004 the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer signed the European Road Safety Charter. Riders’ training started in 1970, when Honda Motor Co Ltd. created its own department of Road Safety promotion. In 1992, Montesa Honda started its own training programme with the creation of Honda's Riding School (HEC).
The creation of the Honda Safety Institute in Barcelona reinforces Montesa Honda’s efforts in the area of Preventive Safety, specifically in training, and confirms Honda’s role as socially responsible business.
