European Economic and Social Committee to hold hearing focusing on the Powered Two-Wheeler Industry

The Consultative Commission on Industrial Change (CCMI) of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) held a hearing in Milan on 12 November 2009

A public hearing on “Industrial change and prospects for the motorcycle industry in Europe” was held on 12 November organised by the Consultative Commission on Industrial Change (CCMI) of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) at the 67th International Motorcycle Exhibition in Milan.EESC

In recent months, the powered two-wheeler sector as a whole has been seriously affected by the financial and economic crisis, leading to a downward review of market forecasts for 2009. These negative repercussions are also being felt in the components sector as well as in distribution in Member States, two sectors largely comprised of small and medium-sized enterprises.

This debate looked at the effects of the economic crisis on the two-wheel motor vehicle sector in Europe and at the challenges ahead. The results of the hearing will contribute to the EESC own-initiative opinion in view of issuing recommendations to the European institutions and Member States with a view to maintaining and boosting competitiveness and employment. This is all the more important in view of an upcoming proposal for a framework regulation on type-approval of two- and three wheel motor vehicles and quadricycles, which the European Commission intends to present in early 2010.

The EESC own initiative opinion is scheduled for adoption in early 2010.
