TfL hosted a two-day summit of the eSUM project
Delegates from Paris, Rome and Barcelona attended a two-day summit on motorcycle safety in London. Transport for London, the capital's agency responsible for mobility, hosted the meeting of the eSUM project reuniting industry and local authorities of Europe’s principal motorcycle capitals. eSUM is a project co-funded by the European Commission that aims at further integrating powered-two wheelers in urban mobility and thereby increasing their safety. The partners' of the project are working on identifying, developing and adopting measures designed to deliver safer motorcycling in the urban environment.
On this occasion, Transport for London demonstrated its scheme based on allowing PTWs to use bus lanes on particular conditions. Sharing expertise and evaluating different mobility policies dedicated to PTWs is one of eSUM's objective. Delegates viewed the safety initiatives already in place in London using taxi motorbikes to get around.
Ensuring motorcyclists can use London's roads safely is a key part of the Mayor's aim of reducing congestion and emission on the roads by encouraging more people to take to two wheels.

One of the first results delivered by eSUM will be a best practice guide for safer motorcycling. The document will be downloadable within weeks on www.esum.eu.

Next to ACEM and TfL, the other parners of the eSUM project are Barcelona's and Paris' city councils, Rome's mobility agency, Piaggio, BMW Motorrad and the Spanish Department of Transport.Once completed, the results of the eSUM work will be made available in a EU-wide database.
