A Road Safety Campaign Promoted by the Motorcycle Industry in Europe
"Lucky 13 is a motorcyclist. Like many others he is on the road every day. He’s also a lucky guy. He doesn’t know that the roadway isn’t always a safe place to ride his motorcycle, yet he pulls it through every time. Don’t be like him, don’t count on your luck like he does. And learn from his mistakes." This is the message behind ACEM's new Safety Campaign.
ACEM has chosen a cartoon character to pinpoint the potential risks related to the infrastructure.
Lucky 13 will explain with his clumsy behaviour what to look out for when we ride our scooter or motorcycle. The objective of this safety campaign is to make riders aware, in an entertaining way, of the risks coming from the roadway itself.
Launched at the European Road Sefety Day on 13 October 2008, the campaign features 13 episodes released on a monthly basis. Each issue focuses on a particular risk factor giving tips and recommendations to riders on how to best tackle these.
The cartoon is based on the “Infrastructure Guidelines Handbook” released by ACEM in 2006 as part of its Safety Plan for Action and was edited with the support of motorcycle training instructors. This technical manual, developed together with road engineers, focussed on infrastructure and provided guidelines for a safer environment for PTWs. This publication was mainly aimed at traffic engineers, urban planners, contractors and policy makers however it included also benefits in terms of safety for PTW users. Lucky 13 will help ACEM to convey the valuable information of the Infrastructure Handbook to PTW users.
ACEM is a signatory of the European Road Safety Charter aiming at reducing road fatalities by 50% by 2010. With this safety campaign the European Motorcycle Industry reaffirms its commitment toward safety.
The growing role of PTWs in Europe’s mobility landscape calls for dedicated safety campaigns. ACEM members actively support the ‘shared responsibility’ concept and are committed to reducing accidents by developing increasingly safer vehicles and by funding research, financing and participating to road safety projects to act together towards the common objective of improving the road safety of powered two-wheeler users.
The second episode of the Lucky 13 Campaign dealing with roadside hazards will be released on the 21st of November.
