Initial Rider Training Project manual
launched in Spain

Anesdor and the Madrid City Council presented the manual
during the European Mobility Week

Madrid, September 18, 2008 - On the occasion of the European Mobility Week, Anesdor (Spanish Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers, member of ACEM) and the City Council of Madrid presented the Initial Rider Training Manual for novice motorcycle riders. The manual is the result of a project co-financed by the European Commission and developed by the Federation of European Motorcyclists' Associations (FEMA), ACEM, Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), Vägverket (Swedish Road Administration) and the International Association for Driver Education (IVV).

The presentation took place in the ancient venue of the City council of Madrid, the Plaza Villa. The speakers' panel was formed by Pedro Bald, in charge of Safety and Mobility for the City council of Madrid, Juan Carlos Andres, President of ANESDOR, Jacques Compagne, Secretary General of ACEM, and Juan Carlos Toribio, responsible for Road Safety for " Associacion Mutua Motera", representing FEMA.

The different interventions highlighted the scope of the manual, aiming to address two fundamental aspects in the training of novice motorcyclists: on the one hand the perception of the risks associated to traffic and, on the other hand, the handling and control of the vehicle. The objective and the interest of the organizations associated to this project are to improve overall safety and to noticeably reduce the accidents involving motorcyclists.

The manual consists of a theoretical part, a part dedicated to the control of the vehicle and a third part dedicated to the relationship between the rider and traffic. It is a very complete and accessible manual, which can be readily used by trainers, as well as non commercial trainers. During the event, a small practical demonstration with PTWs was performed by trainers on how to best approach the world of motorcycles, taking precaution in all maneuvers and signaling each and every one of the rider's movements so that at any moment other road users are aware of the rider's intentions.
