Saferider asks PTW users' opinion on technology

On-line survey to serve as basis for EU-wide study

The adaptation and implementation of appropriate Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and In-Vehicle Information Systems (IVIS) technologies to PTW's might contribute to the significant enhancement of riders' safety. ADAS and IVIS have been successfully developed by the the automotive industry during the last decade, aiming at increasing safety and comfort for cars.

The application of such technologies on motorcycles is being investigated by the SAFERIDER project. Such technologies should be designed in a way that will not interfere with the riding task. Motorcycles are sensitive vehicles in terms of handling and any sudden change in riding dynamics may deprive the rider full control of the vehicle leading to loss of stability.

SAFERIDER on-line survey

In order to find out motorcyclists’ needs and wants an on-line survey was launched. PTW users are invited to answer the SAFERIDER questionnaire, which can be found in 6 languages on:

SAFERIDER Main Activities

SAFERIDER aims at adapting selected ADAS/IVIS functionalities for motorcycles and develop the appropriate Human Machine Interface (HMI). In total, 8 such functionalities are planned to be developed:

  • ADAS functions: Speed alert, Curve speed warning, Frontal collision warning, and Intersection support.
  • IVIS functions: eCall, Navigation & Route Guidance, Telediagnostics, Weather, traffic & black spot warnings.
  • The HMI development plan is based on a common and unified concept, utilising visual, acoustic and haptic elements and integrating them in different subsystems, allowing each ADAS/IVIS functionality to use the most appropriate modality.

During the month of July 2008, two expert members from the ‘Crash Research Department’ of CIDAUT (Centre for Automotive Research and Development, Spain) queried and analyzed the MAIDS database at ACEM´s office in Brussels. Their findings will integrate the conclusions of the EU-wide SAFERIDER study.

All the results from this collaboration will be published on MAIDS and SAFERIDER websites.
