IRT

IRT, from theory to practice

Adopting the Initial Rider Training manual

The manual was publicly used for the first time in Brussels on June 25th. This handbook outlines a comprehensive method to train riders to use PTW, with a particular focus on safety. The MEP ride provided an excellent occasion to put into practice what the Initial Rider Training project encompasses in terms of training methods and safety related instructions.

In conjunction with the MEP ride organised by FEMA, 15 beginners had the opportunity to receive a first lesson on how to use a PTW, according to the IRT manual. Four instructors from the Centre de Maitrise de la Route de Nivelles devoted a their time to one-on-one learning sessions, teaching "learners" the basic principles of safe riding.

The "learners" could then wear their helmet and set off on a scooter provided by ACEM manufactures. In order to allow them to ride in a risk free environment, FEMA had reserved a dedicated area in the Parc du Cinquantenaire where no traffic was allowed. Under the strict supervision of the instructors the new riders were asked to perform the basic maneuvers indicated by the IRT manual and were so able to experience their first ride on a powered two-wheeler.

The IRT manual puts its main focus on the human factor, that is on the concept that safe PTW usage starts with the behaviour of the rider. Higher awareness of the riding environment and of the risks caused by other road users will help riders to build a safety-oriented attitude towards riding and reduce their risk of being involved in accidents.

ACEM, FEMA and FIM participated to the EU co-funded project leading to the publication in several languages of the IRT manual [see article].
