The European Road Safety Charter signing ceremony that took place in Paris on July 2nd was a huge success, highlighting the commitment of the Motorcycle Industry towards safety. Two of the signatories are ACEM members. Peugeot Motocycles and CSIAM made their individual commitments further stressing the involvement of the motocycle industry in road safety.
The event marked the start of the French presidency of the European Union, in the presence of Cécile Petit, Interministerial Road Safety Delegate, and Isabelle Kardacz, Head of the Road Safety Unit at the European Commission Directorate General for Energy and Transport. Signing on behalf of Peugeot Motocycles was Mr Daniel Rivière, and Mr Thierry Archambault represented CSIAM.
13 new French signatories joined the charter movement. They are reinforcing the action of the thousand European signatories involved in this European initiative, which includes 71 French companies, associations, institutions and local bodies.
Peugeot Motocycles contributes to improving road safety as part of the commitment undertaken by ACEM (the Motorcycle industry in Europe) In partnership with the insurance company AMT Assurances, Peugeot aimed its activity to raise safety awareness at owners of 50 cm3 Peugeot models, that is young riders.
As a prevention and encouragement measure, a good driving charter (“My scooter driving contract”) will also be proposed, to be signed by the parents and the rider, in order to raise the latter’s awareness of their own and others’ safety.
The eight points of the charter list the basic behaviour required for responsible and safe driving of a powered two-wheeler (in terms of the Highway Code and other users, wearing a helmet and protective clothing, regular vehicle maintenance, etc.).
To encourage this voluntary step, signatories will be offered a €10 fuel voucher, which means they will receive their first tank of fuel free.
This activity will be quantifiable by the number of charters signed. Taking the 40,000 scooters sold yearly in France by Peugeot as a basis, this action could represent an outlay of €400,000.
The Chambre Syndicale Internationale de l’Automobile et du Motocycle (CSIAM) in accordance with the mandate given to it by its two--wheeled vehicle manufacturers, undertakes to involve its members in actions that promote the safe behaviour of road users and to ensure that they continue to improve the safety of vehicles.
With regard to user behaviour, CSIAM's initiatives will further strengthen the cooperation in legislative issues with the French Department of Safety and Road Traffic. CSIAM will also carry out
awareness, training and communication campaigns targeting the public, particularly during the MotoGP. And finally it will implement training courses focusing on improving the riding skills and the risk perception of PTW users, thus ensuring an improvement in safe behaviour in difficult conditions.
As members of ACEM, Peugeot Motocycles' and CSIAM's commitment to improve the vehicle safety has existed for many years in the framework of ACEM's commitment on advanced braking systems [read more].
