ACEM General Assembly in Gijon (Spain)

acemACEM, the Motorcycle Industry in Europe, held its annual General Assembly in Spain, on May 2 and 3. The organizer of this year's event was Suzuki. Juan Carlos Andrés Aguado, Director General of Suzuki Motor España and President of ANESDOR, welcomed the delegates of the manufacturers and the national associations who converged in the Principate of Asturias from 13 different European countries.

Vertical Agreements Block Exemption Regulation

ACEM has published its position regarding Block Exemption of Vertical Agreements in the PTW sector. The European Commission is in the process of reviewing and assessing the market experience in this field prior to its expiry in 2010. After more than seven years of operational experience, the members of ACEM – manufacturers as well as national associations – express their satisfaction with the competition law framework provided by the Vertical Agreements Block Exemption Regulation.

Von Kuenheim (BMW) new President of IMMA

During the General Assembly held in Toronto on May 6 and 7 Hendrik von Kuenheim, CEO of BMW Motorrad, has been appointed President of IMMA, the International Motorcycle Manufacturers Association. Mr von Kuenheim takes the place of Minoru Harada, Head of operations at Honda Motor Company and Vice-Chairman of JAMA’s Motorcycle Committee, who stepped down after two years in office.

Motor vehicles rank second on the list of recalled products

Report shows rise in number of dangerous products

With 197 notifications motor vehicles rank second, behind toys (417), on the list of recalled products, indicating the threat represented both to the user and to the industry by the import of products that prove to be harmful. A report by the European Commission on the Rapid Alert System (RAPEX) revealed that the number of dangerous products removed from the EU market rose by 53% in 2007 to 1605. Toys were by far the most notified product category in 2007. However motor vehicles also featured prominently in the RAPEX system.

Open days for French race tracks

The French Motorcycle Federation (FFM) is hosting an extensive programme of  "Open Days for Motorcycle Circuits" during which race tracks will welcome motorcycle riders. The French Ministries of Health and of the Environment are supporting the initiative as part of an action plan to increase road safety.

Vulnerable riders Safety implications of motorcycling in the EU. In light of the EU target to halve the number of road deaths by 2010, ETSC is organising a Transport Safety Lunch on May 26 to discuss ways of better protecting motorcyclists in Europe. What is the current situation of PTWs safety in the EU? What can generally be done to increase safety of PTWs on Europe’s roads? What is the role of PTW manufacturers in improving their safety? What is the role of PTW users? Should PTWs and their users be integrated in transport and safety plans with strategies recognising their specificities and needs? What are the main actions the EU has undertaken or is planning to undertake to reduce the risk of this category of road users? [read more]

Conference on Initial Rider Training. The Directorate- General for Energy and Transport of the European Commission co- financed with FEMA (Federation of European Motorcyclist's Associations) a project about "Initial Rider Training" with the aim to propose to Member States' authorities a scheme to improve motorcyclists' safety. ETRA's GREEN WEEK 2008. In the context of the Green Week organised by the European Commission (3-6 June) ETRA will set up a test track for bicycles and for emission-free motorised two -wheelers in the vicinity of the Charlemagne-building, in Brussels. The objective of the event is to show how two-wheelers can be part of the solution to environmental and mobility problems. [read more]

DUCATI enters Indian Market. On May 8th, 2008 Ducati Motor Holding held a press conference to announce its official entry to the Indian motorcycle market - a country with significant potential for growth in the motorcycle sector. Ducati will market motorcyles on the twin platforms of luxury and high performance to a class of consumers comprising successful hyper-enthusiasts, who drive for entertainment, aiming at selling around 50 units in the first year. World’s First Vision Zero Motorcycle Road opened The World’s First Vision Zero Road for motorcycles in Norway on 7 May 2008. The Vision Zero Motorcycle Road has been designed exactly as the motorcyclists themselves recommend. It's features are crash barriers fitted with a sub-rail, forgiving side terrain, well thought out placing of signposts, cutting down sight-hindering vegetation - all in all small modifications and investments that are beneficial for all road users, including bicycles and cars. 15 kilometres cost around 630 000 euros. The Vision Zero Motorcycle Road is the brainchild of two passionate engineers at the regional Road Authorities, Jan Petter Lyng and Bjørn R. Kirste [read more]
